feel the warmth embracing autumn’s Aromas
As you step into the cozy embrace of the home, a warm and inviting ambiance envelops you. The air is infused with the unmistakable scents of autumn, wrapping you in a comforting cocoon of nostalgia and comfort. With each breath, you're greeted by rich, earthy aroma of simmering potpourri, a melody of cinnamon and cloves that dance through the air. A flickering candlelight casts a soft, inviting glow, while the enticing scent of fresh-baked apple pie leads you into the kitchen. It's an experience that makes you feel as if you've just entered a haven of warmth and wonder, where the essence of fall beckons you to stay and savor the season.
The scent plays a big role in our emotions and memories. There are several scientific articles that state this may be due to anatomical reason. The Harvard Gazette published an article that explains how closely the olfactory bulb is to the brain and that due to this,
“Odors take a direct route to the limbic system, including the amygdala and the hippocampus, the regions related to emotion and memory.”
Think about how you feel when you smell buttered popcorn. Your brain may send signals that it is time to settle in to watch a movie, either cozying up on the couch or in a theatre - naturally your next question is “What are we watching tonight?” During the autumn season, the surrounding smells can quickly take us back to childhood and a warm, happy feeling of going to Grandma’s house for Thanksgiving.
This shows us that scents can be used for the positive, decrease stress and evoke a sense of love and happiness from within. It can also be used for marketing as companies have tapped into this emotional connection by utilizing signature scents in their locations. This reminds your of the feelings you have while spending time at their hotel, museum or retail shop.
This time of year brings us many nostalgic feelings. We can incorporate this into our current daily life to reduce stress by several different ways.
Candles - not only do you receive a cozy scent, but a warm flickering flame adds to the vibe. I feel that it is important to know what your candles are made out of and that the scents are derived from essential sources. I have two different places that I love to purchase from.
Essential Oil Diffusers - You can pick up a diffuser almost anywhere these days for little expense. I have several essential oils handy for when the season changes (or my mood).
DIY Room Sprays - a combination of distilled water and essential oil placed in a small spray bottle is the quickest way to add scent to your room.
Potpourri - this is a great way to incorporate smells and also using a visual. If you have the space and can keep this away from toddlers and pets, the scent and color will both add to the atmosphere.
Herbal Wreaths - have you ever smelled a fresh herbal wreath? I love these and would treat myself to them if I didn’t have other things to prioritize my money. Again, beauty added to the atmosphere along with one of the best environmental scents you can experience.
Simmer Pots - this is a traditional way to bring scents into the home. There are several ideas of what you can place in your pot.
