falling in love with fall flavor
As the crisp autumn air sets in and leaves begin to add color the landscape with gorgeous hues of red, orange, and gold, it's the perfect time to welcome the season into our kitchens. Fall offers an abundance of produce that can spark your culinary adventures and warm your home with delicious scents. In this blog, we'll explore the wonders of fall produce and encourage you to embrace the season by experimenting with new recipes that celebrate its flavors.
Fall brings forth a cornucopia of fruits and vegetables that are not only delicious but also incredibly versatile. Here's a list of some of our favorite fall produce:
Pumpkins: The king of fall, pumpkins are not just for carving. They can be transformed into soups, pies, and even savory dishes like pumpkin risotto. Blend pumpkin puree to your chickpeas with garlic and a touch of cayenne for a seasonal hummus dip.
Remember that pie pumpkins are of smaller size as their meat will provide a better tasting puree for your baking needs. I have a video on making pumpkin pie that you can view here.
Apples: With so many varieties available, you can open up many recipe ideas - from tart Granny Smith to sweet Honeycrisp! Think about creating baked apples drizzled with carmel, apple crisp that is topped with a cinnamon streusel topping, hot apple cider with mulled spices or the great apple pie. Add chopped apples and a dash of cinnamon to your yogurt or hot oatmeal.
Butternut Squash: Creamy and nutty squash roasted with apples, used as a side dish or blended into soup. Or, if you prefer, use as a healthy pasta alternative.
Sweet Potatoes: Simply baked whole or roasted wedges with cinnamon and a hint of cayenne, or pureed in a casserole topped with roasted pecans. Have you seen the reel going around for sweet potato brownies? It is four simple ingredients - I think I may try this week. I will post on as a short - subscribe so that you don’t miss it.
Cranberries: Tangy cranberries are a must for homemade sauces, but they can also be used in muffins, scones, and salads. I have a cranberry bread recipe that I make every year that has become a tradition. You can find this recipe here.
If you are interested in cranberry sauce for your holidays this year - check out this blog for the simple recipe.
Brussels Sprouts: Roasted Brussels sprouts with a balsamic glaze or bacon are a delightful side dish for fall dinners.
Pears: Baked and drizzled with maple syrup is delicious. Mix in baked pears with apples for a upgrade in your applesauce.
There are many more seasonal vegetables that you can experiment with. Some of these include:
Pomegranite - Persimmons
Pinapple
Canteloupe
Sunflower Kernels
Turnip - Mushrooms
Garlic - Ginger
Endive - Butter Lettuce - Arugula - Swiss Chard
This fall, don't just admire the beauty of the season, bring it into your kitchen and onto your plate. Enjoy working with these fall produce gems and discover the joy of new delicious dishes that embrace the flavors of autumn.
So, don your apron, grab a bushel of apples, and let the aroma of simmering butternut squash soup fill your home. Embrace the flavors of fall, and your taste buds will thank you.
Happy cooking, and may your autumn be filled with warmth and delicious discoveries!
